A pregnant woman.

What characteristics define this noble creature? Hormonal, of course, and as it should be. Lacking in brain power, quite forgiveable, as the blood that normally visits there is now taken by a new life, which is such a beautiful thing that one can only smile when she forgets her phone number, where she left the car keys, and sometimes, her own name. Women who would never have this kind of problem under any other condition, any other stress...

In other words, a pregnant woman is the LAST person who should be making ANY sort of life changing decision, even in her OWN life.

Why, then, do we leave this decision up to her? It may be her body, but she is in an altered state during this time.

So why, how can we even think that this person should have a decision that could impact the world, and her own life, with such magnitude? It doesn't make any sense!

Alas, there is nobody that can choose for her, including herself. The woman, even before she is pregnant, is not properly equipped to choose. During the pregnancy, as discussed, is not fit to choose. After the pregnancy is too late. It is nobody else's right to make the decision for her. I can think of only one other soul who has any right to choose in this instance - and they are not born yet, not nearly old enough to choose.

Is this some sort of joke? Do you realize how much like a chauvinist you sound?

"Blood that should be in her brain is in her [abdomen]"? What kind of crap is that? Are you going to now suggest that since women are too hormonal, they should be treated like property?

As a person, as a human being, I find this "argument" stupid and offensive.

Jeesh. Are you serious? - I really hope you didn't hear this in church today.

The woman, even before she is pregnant, is not properly equipped to choose

That is why you are Anti-Choice?

and btw, equipped with what? what are you equipped with that she doesnt have? .......

Lacking in brain power

you're permanently pregnant?

Exactly! Women should know their place - in the kitchen baking pies. They shouldn't learn to read either, it's a well-known fact that teaching girls to read makes them overheat in the brain cavity and, in extreme cases, permanently sours them against their natural betters, menfolk.

boy i don't want to be you two.

Wow, Jythier. I'm virulently anti-abortion, but, umm, dude, I have to go with the consensus here.

Imagine that: me, LW, shades, cacto, TW, Loca, SC, Beebles and kingbee ALL in agreement. An unlikely combo if ever you'll find it.

And, uh, I wouldn't show this to your wife. Not unles the sofa's pretty durn comfy!

Chauvinist? No. See, a chauvinist thinks that women are inferior to men. In this article, there is no mention of men, except of the fact that they, also, should not be making this decision.

When I refer to women before pregnancy, they are not equipped to make the decision as they are not actually carrying a child yet, and therefore don't know how they truly feel about that child. The enhanced emotions that they feel are sometimes love for the baby. Imagine, being trapped in a decision to abort when you now love the baby! So no, not equipped to make the decision beforehand.

The difference in the woman is slighter than I have presented here - but that means it can be the difference between "I abhor abortion but other people should have the choice" and "I abhor abortion but other people are doing it, so it can't be that bad."

Cacto:

"Exactly! Women should know their place - in the kitchen baking pies. They shouldn't learn to read either, it's a well-known fact that teaching girls to read makes them overheat in the brain cavity and, in extreme cases, permanently sours them against their natural betters, menfolk."

That's the attitude that makes this position so unpopular. Despite the fact that 'pregnancy brain' (which I thought had a medical explanation but does not, I apologize for that) has been experienced by many pregnant women, the suggestion that a woman should not legally be able to make a decision regarding whether her baby should die or live during this time is seen as anti-woman, just a step along the way to female slavery. Over 200,000 Americans dead? I think your decision making privileges can be removed. Even when the State decides to execute someone they get an appeal. Not so for these poor souls. But now I'm getting more into pro-life.

No, did not hear it in church.

So what is impairing her cognitive ability, then?

I love how you actually don't see this piece as a pile of chauvinist bullshit.

Makes me laugh so hard it covers up my tears on your children's behalf.

Believe my, jthier, nothing is impairing a woman's cognitive ability. I think you're thinking of short term memory problems, which likely have more to do with stress than any hormonal basis.

Honestly, in my opinion (and I would be qualified to know), if anything, a woman's cognitive ability is INCREASED during pregnancy, if it is affected at all.

Just for the record, though, jythier...you are young, and you will learn...but if you are a man, speaking with any authority on women and hormones is just bad mojo. This goes for pregnancy, PMS, and, well, pretty much any other related area your wife says it does. This should be in a manual given to every man at the onset of puberty.
