My Story
Published on June 29, 2007 By Jythier In Welcome
Today, I noticed I did not have an official "Welcome" article. So I am going to rectify that now, by sharing the story of how I came to be a part of the JoeUser community, and my thoughts on my beginning.

Long ago, in a time when Stardock was a tiny Michigan based company - well, not that long ago. But it was a time for Iraq, and a time for indie development of computer games. For some reason, I knew who Brad Wardell was. Some project or another of his, around this time, made me want to find out more about this "Stardock" company, and why I had not heard of it. So I looked for it, and I stumbled upon JoeUser.

If I remember correctly, at this point, JoeUser.com was mostly a compilation of Brad Wardell's thoughts. Thoughts on the war in Iraq and why it was good that we were going, thoughts about independent game development, and other things that are not sticking at the moment. I did not know I could have my own blog - at that point, I might not have been able to. It was early, yet, in the development of this massive sphere of blogging community that I love.

So I read his articles, and they seemed well thought out, and not like anything I had heard before. See, in college, everyone was against Iraq. Mr. Wardell was the only dissenting opinion I had heard at the time, and so I was very convinced by him. I also wrote a paper for school based on his independent gaming articles, which I think I even sourced. I was bad at bibliographies.

So, I went away from JoeUser, and stayed away for a while. I forgot it existed, pretty much. I had other things to do - games to play, girls to chase, etc, wives to marry, etc. I eventually returned to JoeUser, just to check in with Mr. Wardell, who was my hero at the time. What did I find? PEOPLE! Tons and tons of people, clogging up everything. I just wanted to read what Mr. Wardell thought, not all these other guys! You all almost scared me away!

But I saw something that I had not seen before... in the upper right hand corner of the screen, there was a strange box. A box... that held the key to my own blog.

I didn't know much about blogging, but I knew this - if other people could post this drivel, I could too!

So I signed up. My account says it was February 2003, but I didn't post anything until February 2006. I don't know about the cross logins for Stardock forums (I was active on the GalCiv forum for a while), but February 2006 came, and it was time to take the plunge. My first article set the tone for my journey down the tubes - "Ethics and the accounting field." (Thanks for your continued support, Dr. Guy. You are the only comment on many of my articles!) What was I thinking?

My second article, Why Is Jesus So Important? gathered a better response, but I was heading down a road where I was posting what the community seemed to want instead of what I wanted to post, in order to become popular. While that's a fun road to be on, it usually has a giant cliff right before the end of it. So I tried many themes - accounting, games, lifeblog, etc.

Then, it hit me. Maybe I'm not really meant to have my own material very often.

Since then, I haven't worried so much about whether I have the greatest articles in the world. I like to read everyone else's blog, and comment. I know I have some really good comments, but starting from scratch is just not the way for me to get going. But I will continue to post articles, as they come to me. Sooner or later, I'll have a great idea, like this one, and I'll just go with it, and we'll have a wonderful time hanging out on my blog for a change. But until then, I'll see you at your place. You have a bigger TV.

"Belated welcome to JU!"

Thanks! Glad to be here.

Jythier,

Don't be intimidated by the lack of replies. I personally have more "misses" than "hits", and many worthy articles have sunk into the either (thanks for the inspiration...I may have to work up an article on my all time great "disappointments"). In baseball, sometimes batters will go on long streaks where they're making great contact with the ball but everything is falling into the hands of a fielder. Same with blogging. But in blogging, as in baseball, eventually those solid hits will find their way into an open field. So stay at it, write for you, and eventually the "hits" will come.

You cheated, though. No "welcome" article means we didn't get to haze you properly. We will rectify that shortly. Whip, would you mind bringing the candlewax? I've got everything else, or so it would seem

Now I remember why I didn't start with a welcome article! I take it back, I take it back!

hey Jy...i've enjoyed chewin the fat with ya and i'm sure you have your own unique perspective to bring to the table. and it is more than welcome as far as i'm concerned. whether you choose to write your own stuff, share things you see elsewhere with the JU community or just comment on other people's work, you are surely welcome. in the end, you'll probably enjoy offering all 3, when the times are right...and don't worry bout comments...most people don't comment on 90% of what they read....well, i don't at least.

like gid said, do it for you 1st. you can't go wrong when you take that approach.

I guess it all started when I started playing softball instead of baseball... in baseball, I was so bad, I had a negative batting average. Softball, I can hit that thing like no tomorrow, and usually do. So, I guess I'm expecting that my articles will all be hits now, when really, I'm still playing baseball. Did that make any sense?

i get what yer sayin...reminds me of the old saying "just when i draw a straight flush i find out that everyone else is playing monopoly."

I did not realize you had been here so long.  I remember you writing about getting out of college and looking for your first job.  Then going into Forensic Accounting.  I have often been accused of being an accountant, but am not (I find doing the work to be very tedious as I am a lousy record keeper).  But still find the subject interesting and like to at least read up on the good parts of it, hence why I read and commented on your articles (I still find your field to be interesting - so keep writing what you want).

The politics forum can get rough at times, as can the religious one now adays.  But most of the others are tame and what one would consider "talk about town" in your own neighborhood.

I have noticed that since you have started commenting more, you have a sharp wit, and a great sense of humor.  I like reading your ribs and wit in those responses!  Sometimes humor says more than a tome of prose!

So welcome, keep up with what you like to do, and enjoy the pool.  We dont have any real sharks, just some that pretend to be at times.

Thanks Dr. Guy, knew I'd see you here eventually.

I really love this community, thanks for being so welcoming.

Hey Jy.

Great story..and just what I needed to help me remember you. When someone comes to JU, unless they come on guns ablazin, they are kinda like a gray mist in my mind. I remember them when I see their name. But once its outta sight...well, outta mind.

What connects me to other JUers is some sort of background/personal story. I was starting to label you as "Christian" in my head....but now when I see your name I will remember this story and already feel connected.

So maybe all you needed was this article FIRST..hahaha.

Oh and welcome.

You are a wonderful addition to JU.

Christian works for me! Thanks for the compliment, and I'm sure I'll see you around. Summer is your slow JU season, though, right?
